The Numbered Days is an event driven company specializing in connecting individuals through a house party experience founded by Marc Uible and Brian Marks and have been featured on countless of news outlets like the Huffington Post, Time Out Chicago, and more. Their mission isn’t to cure diseases or save a forest – at least not yet. They simply believe in people and that bringing them together can lead to something big. Their events aim to create a community of passionate, innovative people who want to share ideas and take action. Here are three crucial tips you need to know to have an awesome house party experience.

The Funeral: How The House Party Died And Three Ways To Bring It Back.

Remember the excitement of a true house party? It was a thrill to think about getting together with friends and strangers, obeying no rules, and doing something different. Unfortunately, the house party has gone up in flames.

Seeping in the ashes of an interesting night is the pre-game. You inviting a few friends over to drink, perhaps listen to some tunes, watch TV, and after an hour or two – depart for a bar. There’s almost no risk. But there’s also no thrill, and that’s the problem. Honestly, when was the last time you put a place holder in your Gmail calendar to go to Stanleys, Debonair, or Hop Leaf?

The great part about bringing back the house party is that it’s not hard to do. A great house party is made of three things: New people, good music, and well-divided space.

1. New people

Old friends are great, but having a room full of people that you know well can spell out: ‘standard night’. Spice up a night with new people. By this we mean interesting people you or your friends have met in the course of life (work, gym, Numbered Day’s Events, friends of friends, etc.).

Fresh faces bring new perspectives, music, and dance moves. To that end, we usually shoot for an ‘old-friend to new people’ ratio of 60/40. If you can’t think of these folks, ask old friends to bring 2-3 people that aren’t apart of the crew already.

2. Good music

This one sounds easy, but isn’t. By good music, we mean music that your audience will like – not music that you specifically like. Playing through the entire Yeezus album or endless 90’s hits isn’t going to win you any points. The party doesn’t care what you like and won’t respect you more for playing new “drops” all night.

The party wants to hear music they know and like while being pushed with a few new jams. This may take some ego suppression, but please for the good of all, take some time to put together a party playlist. If you’re stuck, 8tracks is a great playlist resource. If you have a subscription to Rdio, Spotify, or Pandora – that will work too – if not, no one wants to hear ads every three songs. If you’re stuck, e-mail The Numberedays with your party vibe and we’ll send some suggestions.

3. Divide up your space

Ever notice how the crowd always gathers in the kitchen? People like feeling close and that’s usually where the drinks are. Create a more interesting night by giving folks different areas to get drinks and feel close. When the crowd spreads out, real conversations are more likely happen.

Divide up your space based on the size of the party. 10-15 people? Bring the couches in the living room closer together and make a small bar on the table. 30-50? Create 3 or more spaces where people can gather.

The house party is dead in many senses. But bringing back a juicy night isn’t that hard. All it takes is a combination of fresh faces, good music, and a decent layout for people to get to know each other. Onward with hope-
